Grandparents Day: Give Them the Gift of You All Year Long

Sep 5, 2017 by Tracy Kelley

See ways to spend more time with your grandparents on Grandparents Day, and all year ‘round!

September 10th is National Grandparent’s Day, and it’s the perfect time to give your grandparents what they really want: time with their families! Make it all year, rather than just a day here or there. Those in the senior home care industry, like Comfort Keepers, can tell you that so many seniors feel lonely and wish they could see their families more often. Ensuring that our senior loved ones feel valued and appreciated is important, and there are many ways you can do this all throughout the year. Also, don’t forget your “grandfriends” on Grandparent’s Day who may not have family to visit them.

Things to Do to Celebrate Grandparent’s Day

According to Generations United, the thing grandparents want the most is your time! This Grandmother’s Day, try:

-Taking senior loved ones out for a special meal.

-Buying your grandparents a nice present, like chocolates, a favorite scent, or flowers.

-Calling or sending a card.

Grandparent’s Day All Year

Grandparent’s Day is also a great time to make a commitment to being in your grandparents’ or grandfriends’ lives more than just a few times a year. That is the greatest gift you can give! Choose a day a week or every other week to see your elderly loved one for some quality time. Consider:

-Make them a meal and then eat together.

-Have them show you how to make their best recipes.

-Look through photo albums and listen to their stories.

-Go for a walk.

-Make a craft or piece of artwork.

-Read to them.

-Create a family tree together.

-Start or tend a flower or vegetable garden.

-Go bird watching.

-Visit a museum.

-Go shopping together.

If you’re not close enough to visit your elderly loved one, make a commitment to call, video chat and write at least once a week. Your elderly loved one will be thrilled, and you’ll get back as much love and worth that you put in to the relationship in the form of all the wisdom and advise your elderly loved ones can impart! Any caregiver can attest to the valuable wisdom held by our elderly loved ones.

Comfort Keepers hopes you and your senior loved ones have the greatest Grandparent’s Day to last all year. For more information about our team at Comfort Keepers, click here, or call us at 863-292-6199.
